Other ways to get around Curaçao
A rental car is not automatically the right answer for every traveler. Where you stay, how long you are visiting and what you want to do should determine your transportation strategy.
Taxis
Taxis are useful for airport transfers, dinners, nightlife and individual trips. They are particularly convenient when you plan to enjoy drinks and do not want to drive afterward.
For longer island trips, however, taxi costs can add up quickly. Always confirm the expected fare and pickup arrangements before starting a longer journey.
Public Transportation
Curaçao's public transportation can be a budget-friendly option for travelers with flexible schedules. It works best when your itinerary follows established routes and you have plenty of time.
The tradeoff is flexibility. If you want to visit several beaches in one day, stop at a restaurant and then catch the sunset somewhere else, relying entirely on public transportation may make the day much slower.
Walking Around Willemstad
Willemstad is one of the easiest parts of Curaçao to explore on foot. Punda, Otrobanda and Pietermaai offer restaurants, shopping, waterfront views and historic streets within relatively manageable walking distances.
If you are staying nearby, walking can actually be easier than repeatedly finding parking. Combine walking with occasional taxis when you need to travel farther.
Cruise Visitors Need a Different Strategy
Cruise passengers have one transportation consideration that hotel guests do not: the ship has a departure time.
If you only have several hours in Curaçao, avoid building an itinerary that sends you unnecessarily from one side of the island to another. Staying close to Willemstad can be the smartest choice for a short port visit.
If you want to explore farther away, a rental car, taxi or organized excursion can give you much better control over your limited time.
